How is thrifting changing in 2025? The Vintage Seeker joins The Get Thrifty Podcast to talk about it

Progress

From higher prices to who shops at a thrift store, the thrifting market has changed a lot in the past decade. We sit down with The Get Thrifty Podcast to discuss what's next

Ever walked into a thrift store and wondered, “Why is this priced like it’s in a boutique?” Or spied a reseller stocking up a cart and felt frustrated?

We’re talking about all of it on the Mar. 11 episode of The Get Thrifty Podcast, where The Vintage Seeker publisher Kristina Urquhart appears as a guest alongside host Maggie Scivicque of Arc Thrift Stores, to talk all things thrift, vintage and resale.

What we discuss in this episode:

  • The changing meaning of the word “thrift” and the types of thrift stores within the space
  • Building bridges between sellers and buyers with education
  • The role of the reseller at the thrift store
  • The “gentrification” of thrifting and accessibility
  • How pricing and quality have changed
  • The free-to-search, free-to-list Shop Secondhand Directory
  • Mad Men, Dolly Parton and shopping tips

Here’s a quick excerpt:

Kristina Urquhart, The Vintage Seeker: [Resellers] are helping to turn over some of that volume that we talked about. Thrift stores have ebb and flow in terms of the amount of donations that people are bringing in, but there have been periods where thrift stores here can't keep up with the amount of donations that they have.

Maggie Scivicque, Get Thrifty Podcast: It’s incredible, the amount of waste.

Kristina: Right, and they're helping to take some of that volume out so that we don't discard all of it. There’s just so much that ends up not selling. And part of that is the way that we are sold to as consumers, too.

Because in the larger marketplace, we are being sold to all the time. We have preferences and aesthetics that we like because marketers are showing us different ways that we can do our home, what we should be wearing, etc.

I think there are a lot of products in the secondhand space that get totally passed over because people have decided that they're not cool enough, not trendy enough, right? Shopping this way really requires you to come up with your own taste, which I like.
